The Presence of Drugs In the United States

Drug and substance abuse is a pervasive issue that continue to plague communities throughout the United States. Illicit substances such as cocaine, methamphetamines, and opioids debilitate every aspect of life, from home to the workplace, transforming once vibrant neighborhoods into slums. The alarming rates of drug overdoses highlight the urgent need for effective measures to address these concerns.

One solution is education and awareness programs. These efforts inform people about the dangers of drug misuse, provide prevention strategies, and create support and recovery services for the addicted. For these to be effective, close collaboration is needed between healthcare professionals, law enforcement agencies, schools, and community organizations.

That said, another piece of the puzzle is businesses conducting mandatory drug testing. These tests mitigate the harmful consequences of substance abuse and foster safer, drug-free working environments. It is part of a proactive stance needed to combat the devastating effects of drugs on individuals and society as a whole.

But what about the workplace itself? How does drug testing improve the performance and working environment of a business?

Before we discuss the benefits, let's make one thing clear; for many industries, comprehensive drug testing is mandatory. Performing them is simple compliance with state and federal regulations. If that were't enough, drug testing is necessary to uphold workplace safety standards.

For example, operating heavy machinery requires full attention and precise movements to ensure safety for the operator and those around them. But a near universal result of substance abuse is impaired cognitive function, decreased coordination, and slowed reaction times... making it impossible to operate machines responsibly. Or take the transportation industry; driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol has proven to increase the risk of accidents, injuries, and fatalities. Simply put, to operate heavy machinery or vehicles while under the influence of drugs puts the lives of your co-workers and other citizens at risk.

A comprehensive approach to drug testing not only is legally required, and not only keeps the workplace safe, but also promotes a better workplace culture. Employees that are drug free are proven to have fewer absent days. And a drug-free workplace creates an environment where individuals can thrive professionally while feeling secure in their surroundings. Investing in drug testing protocols is an investment in the safety and health of their employees.

Types of Drug Testing in Spokane WA and CdA

Reasonable Suspicion

Reasonable suspicion drug testing is conducted when employers have evidence or reasonable cause to suspect that an employee is under the influence of drugs while on the job. This suspicion is typically based on specific observations such as behavior, appearance, or performance issues. The purpose of reasonable suspicion drug testing is to ensure workplace safety by identifying and addressing substance abuse issues promptly. This type of testing is often conducted in industries where safety is paramount, such as transportation, manufacturing, and construction.

Pre-Employment Screening

Pre-employment drug screening is a standard procedure for companies aiming to uphold a drug-free workplace environment. This practice involves conducting drug tests on potential hires so they must prove they are drug free BEFORE they begin impacting the business. In other words, pre-employment drug screening helps employers make good hiring decisions, providing access information they never otherwise would have.

Random Drug Testing SpokanePre-Employment Screening

Random drug testing is widely recognized as a fair, impartial method of upholding a drug-free workplace environment. Annual, regular drug testing is helpful, but some workers are able to pause their substance abuse for the test, and then resume using afterwards. By randomly selecting employees for drug screening without prior suspicion, employees cannot predict when they will be tested, and thus are continually deterred from substance abuse. It conveys a strong message that drug use is unacceptable within the organization.

Guardian Health Drug Testing Spokane Options

We follow strict protocols to detect even trace amounts of substance misuse in your system and provide you with accurate and reliable result and check for a wide variety of substances. For the longest time drug testing was limited to simple urine samples. But the procedure has evolved as it has been impacted by technological advancements. Unless otherwise specified, each test can detect illegal drugs (methamphetamine, cocaine, ecstasy), addictive prescription drugs (opioids), marijuana (THC), and excessive alcohol use:

  • Hair Follicle Test: Also known as hair strand tests or "hair drug testing", a small amount of hair (100-120 strands) is cut and sent to a lab. There and tested for any drugs consumed 90 days before the test. No hair products will affect the outcome of the testing.

  • Blood Test: This is the most thorough form of drug test, and usually only reserved for extreme cases, severe accidents, or legal situations. However, it has a small window for testing (two-three days) but has the lowest rate of failure or false positives.

  • Saliva Test: Also known as a mouth swab drug test. While unable to determine drug use beyond 48 hours, it is so simple that easy that it is often used on site for randomized tests or immediately after an accident to determine if someone was under the influence. It is suggested that an individual obtain from food and beverages (literally anything other than water) for the 10 minutes prior to taking the test.

  • Breath Test: Famously used by police to determine if someone is driving under the influence of alcohol. A breathalyzer can tell is an individual has a blood alcohol content over the legal limit.

  • Urine Test: This is the oldest and most common form of drug testing, and one everyone is familiar with: pee in a cup, and that cup is sent off for laboratory testing. The lab uses antibodies to detect the presence of illicit substances.

Following the analysis, a medical review officer meticulously reviews the findings before our dedicated team promptly delivers the conclusive test results to the relevant party. This stringent process ensures reliable outcomes.
